New Year New Me?

Happy New Year! I think that I am speaking for everyone when I say 2020, you will not be missed! 2021 is being so hyped up. Everyone just wanted to leave 2020 in the past so bad. But when the ball dropped in this year, frankly nothing felt different. Now I am not saying it ever feels different. Every year January 1st feels exactly like December 31st, just some years I have a headache and don’t leave my bed.

Every year, we make New Year's Resolutions that we never keep. Most of the time they are; I am going to work out more, lose weight, eat healthier, or the classic get my life together. Then there is always me, my new years’ resolution from fourth grade to seventh grade was to not break a bone, specifically an arm/wrist. I had an issue with that in the past… But anyways moving on, these resolutions are never kept.

In recent years rather than making a year-long resolution, I would make monthly goals. Each month, well most months, I would pick a goal I wanted to accomplish that month. It takes roughly 27 days to make a habit so I thought this would be the perfect amount of time. I made goals like, “I am going to keep my room clean,” or “I will go to the gym three times a week,” or “I will drink more water.”

None of these seemed to catch on and no habits were really formed. This year I want things to be different/need things to be different. I feel like there are different types of New Year's Resolutions, dreams/aspirations, goals, and attainable goals.

Dreams/Aspirations

these are the resolutions about traveling more, your dream career, getting a significant other or buying your dream home. These dreams are great. They aspire to push you towards something better. But there are a lot of factors and other goals that have to be met before you can achieve them.

Goals

These are one step smaller than your dreams. Want to buy your dream home; save money. Want to travel more; save money. Want your dream career; network. Want a boyfriend; I don't know about this one, boys are confusing good luck! But something else always has to happen before achieving your dreams. Goals help you achieve it.

Attainable Goals

I think that every dream/aspiration needs to have a map/plan of how you will achieve it. It starts with attainable goals. If 2020 has taught us anything, it's that we need to celebrate the little victories in life. Want to buy that dream home, need to save money, put 10% of your paycheck away, stop eating out as much. These goals are much easier to keep track of than big general goals.

I've decided to hold myself accountable for my goals for 2021. I want to make my dreams and aspirations come true. I will make goals, and I will set attainable goals as well. 2020 was a pretty awful year, but some good things did come out of it. I was reminded of how lucky I am. I got to spend quality time with my friends and family, I graduated from college. Now I want to be able to celebrate those achievements in 2021.
